Right it's got a 1500Hp Lycoming gas turbine engine..Which also creates a massive infrared signature at night because of the exhaust heat.

since all these other that replied to this are retard i'll tell ya
it was a turbine engine (gov't at 1500hp) at idle the engine (not a motor, a motor runs off electricity)is spinning at 10,000 rpms.
so the short and sweet of it is the noise u hear is hydraulics and the engine turn idling

I like the Leopard 2A6 better, it's a good match for the Abrams. It seems to have some advantages.
As for the Turbine..which operates at temps of more than 500C compared to the diesels @ about 90C..Now let's say you're in a helo or plane with some IR missiles who's gonna light up like a christmas tree?
Also the fuel comsumpsion is enormous and it requires more maintenance..
Good thing about the turbine is thats it's lighter and has a better torque curve = better acceleration.

even if the abrams' engine runs at higher temps. both the leopard and the abrams looks like christmas trees with IR, so I dont think it would be much difference in this case...

A diesel engine whould be a bit easier to conseal as it probably whould take shorter time to cool down when stationary. but the abrams is planned to recive the leopard 1500hp diesel engine in the not to distant future.
