Atlanta 1996 OC - Parade of Athletes Part 1 of 10
Uploaded by: rockies77
Video Description:
One of the main highlights of any Olympic Games opening ceremony: the arrival of the Olympic athletes by nations.
First, a message from the late Baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937), founder of the modern Olympic Games, was read out in both English and French: the official IOC languages. If you ask me about the narrator there, it sounded familiar from a CBC news reporter. Like the IOC, Canada's official languages are English and French, too.
Next, the list of past Olympic Games host cities are read out by another narrator.
Finally, the parade of athletes start with the nation of GREECE (La Grèce) because, by tradition, it is the home of the Olympiad. In 1997, Athens had finally got to bring the Olympic Games home for 2004. Afghanistan (L'Afghanistan) and Albania (L'Albanie) are announced here, to unfortunately conclude this clip.
Notes:
1. This was the last time the Afghani team marched under that former flag here. It was banned from competing at Sydney 2000 because of the former Taliban government's views about women in general, never mind in sports. It would return at Athens 2004, under a new government and a new and current flag.
2. Since this parade had ONE-HUNDRED-AND-NINETY-SEVEN (197) national teams competing in these Games, the CBC thought that it was impossible to showcase the entire sequence. Therefore, I will try to put here the national teams that were omitted from this big broadcast.

| I like what NBC did for the 2004 Parade of Nations. When they came back from commercials, they briefly highlighted the countries they had missed. Though since it was tape-delayed, they technically didn't have to miss any in the first place. |

| I tell you - i was at the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremonies - just to the right of the ramp. i tell you, you think that was a good entrance for the athletes, you should have been in attendance. The minute the lights lite the back of the ramp and you saw the greece flag was flipping amazing. Sad not other olympics have followed suit - it was completely amazing. |
