Uploaded by: unnamed00
Video Description:
Game played in Montreal on September 13, 1981. Canada was undefeated in the tournament and was expected to win.
I know the commentary is not good; it is not live and is over the Canadian one.

The 1981 team had the advantage of being a "team"...a team that had plenty of time to prepare as a "team"...That trained as a "team" specifically for international tournaments...While this year's Russian team was thrown together in a week...like only Canada used to have to do...So I would have to say this year's Russian club is more impressive...Cheers!

I meant that I enjoyed more the way they played in 1987 (and 1981) rather then in 2008.
I do not compare the skill or talent, I compare the game itself, considering it as a stage peformence...
The 2008 team knew how to play on the smaller ice ring (=rink?), they did not know that in 1987, even if the result of the game was not the one they expected, they still managed to do some things that looked almost impossible.

The 81 and 87 teams were set teams that practiced extensively together...they were a well trained well prepared team...Can you imagine what this years club could do if they had that kind of preparation? Did you see some of the plays they pulled off? The Soviets looked so much better than the 2008 Russians because they had all kinds of time to put their game together...

May be... you are right. Anyway, I am sure we will see the team Canada win IHWC soon.
How else can it be in a country with good hockey traditions?

THe best players werent playing in this years world cup for Canada. I'm sure canada could have used Crosby and other Pittsburg and Redwing players on their team. Only person RUssia could have used is Malkan

The point was this 1981 victory was the Soviets shining moment in hockey history...The world championships and Olympics were second rate...But now that the Russians are in the NHL they are under the same disadvantage that only Canada was before...Therefore they deserve more credit for this year's victory than those of past Soviet achievements which weren't really that impressive when you consider the circumstances...

The NHL and hockey should look at the 1972 summit series and see how more fluid and visually pleasing the game was back then for the simple reason that the players wore less padding and the goaltender had less padding as well. I cant even watch hockey now with all the armor they got on, the puck can hardly be seen.

What about Datsyuk, Gonchar, Samsonov, Zubov? Also Frolov was injured, a very good player.

Still can't believe the best Canada could come up with was Mike Liut in goal. Not exactly a hall-of-fame netminder. No wonder there were often 8-7 games in the NHL in the early 1980s.

Stop blaming Liut. He won the Pearson Trophy that year.

The Pearson Trophy and $1.45 will get you a large cup of Tim Horton's coffee. Just goes to show how lousy the goaltending was in the early 1980s and the main reason why guys like Gretzky were reaching as high as 92 goals.

Very respected? Get serious. Take a survey of 100 hockey fans and I guarantee at least 90 have no idea what the award is for. At best they might say it's the old Cup that the Blue Jays and Expos played for each year.

It might not be as well known, but some might say that it is more respected since it is voted by the players.

I gotta agree with tkunder on this. If nobody knows what it is, how can it be respected? They go together. I'm a huge hockey fan and barely remembered this trophy even existed. Most probably would still say "oh, isn't that the trophy the Blue Jays and Expos battled for each year?" Liut was an average goalie who had one good year - the rest were just okay. Liut and the Blues choked that year in the playoffs when it counted most. The best-ever stood the test of time as superstars - and won.

Regardless of what you think of that trophy, the fact that he was second in the Hart Trophy voting after Gretzky says a lot.

It says he had one lucky year - a lot like Hextall in 1987. Gretzky should have won the award that year, but players just wanted to give it to someone else because he won everything, and that alone dilutes its merit. Gretzky was best, hands down. Liut will never be mentioned among the greats, nor should he be.

To our Russian friends..you really handed it to us that year and in 1979 at the Challenge Cup. what a team the Soviets had. However there was 1972, 1976, 1984 and 1987, so overall Canada will have to claim the belt for that era of International hockey. i doubt we'll ever see anything like that again though that will not only produce such incredible and sublime hockey, but transcend the sport as well. both countries should be very proud.

Hey, get serious. You canadiens shouldn´t have won neither 1972 nor 1987. In 72 you cut off the best soviet players leg, and in 1987 you had all the referees on your side. The soviets were better both these years.

...The Soviets had the refs on their side big time in 72, certainly in Russia. But that didn't seem to matter in the end... Too much heart on the Canadian team. And 87 ... Gretzky to Lemieux... The two best players to ever play this game... Ya, I think we "shoulda" won that one as well and evidently we did.
We are and always will be the best hockey nation on the planet. Deal with it. lol
