The so-called ' ... ( 2 months ago by 12Zwolf)
The so-called 'under-ground' is to be commended as actual music leading to hard-core garage rock, to metal, to punk, to the modern metal opera such as Cradle of Filth, or Camelot, as opposed to the same 23 studio musicians ( 'play-it-Steve' ), and Brill-Building-Swill' clogging the radio air-waves.
Also, I learned in my childhood that the diacritical mark ' X ' designates the so-called 'clicked' consonant, used in certain African tribal speech patterns.
Cheers!

Problem is, "Good Rockin' Tonight" sucks. It's a really bland song.
Now, "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee" by Stick McGhee is a BADASS song. Released in 1948, gets my vote for first rock 'n roll song. Much faster and wilder than "Good Rockin' Tonight".

I was going by (faulty) memory when I wrote that Ramblin' Jack had said the song was recorded in '49. He sang it on Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review Tour, '74 or '75, I caught in Toronto and Niagara Falls, NY. That's the last time I ever heard it, yet the chorus still comes clearly to mind! I knew he said 40-something, and guessed '49. Ah, so it was Louis Jordan who did "Salt Pork"! I didn't know that factoid. Thanks.

Right. Some of my fave music is traditional music of the Gnawa, a black tribe in Morocco who play a 3 string bass guitar-like instrument, the Guimbri, I think it's called, and their very old music sounds a lot like the Blues! It's ridiculous, the claim made by others here that Irish music is the original source for R&R R&B, Blues and Jazz! Get serious. Black slaves brought their own rich African music traditions with them, kept them and developed them.

In the '60s/'70s, ... ( 2 months ago by Bobb9999)
In the '60s/'70s, those bands' music was referred to as ROCK, as distinct from the then "old fashioned" 50s-style Rock and Roll. I grew up late '60s/'70s and I know by then "R&R" had become an outdated term for outdated '50s music. White ROCK (with exceptions like Hendrix) ruled unfortunately. ROCK was the term used, not R&R.People had stopped listening to R&R like Chuck Berry, except via Rolling Stones' Berry covers.
Applying the term "R&R" to '60s Rock is a modern (if not inaccurate) revision.
Thank You For ... ( 2 months ago by 12Zwolf)
Thank You For Replying; 'Old-fashioned-R'n'B' is qualified via Saxophone/trumpet as lead/solo instrument(s), but real 'rock-and-roll' uses electric guitar/bass as the lead/solo instrument as expressed in 'electric rock-a-billy', that became modern 'rock'n'roll' e.g., 'Mountain/Leslie West' & 'The Who' a.k.a. 'Maximum R'n'B'; The so-named 'race records' have been in place since the first cylinder recording via recording artist(s), and/or recording-cover art-work.
Cheers!

By "those bands", I was referring to the examples you gave of "real" R&R music: Deep Purple,Mountain...
My point is white guitar band music of the '60s/'70s was 2nd generation R&R. In its time,it was viewed as the new wave. So "new" it was then NOT considered to be R&R at all, but "Rock"! By then "R&R" referred to "out of date" music by L. Richard, C. Berry, J. Lee Lewis, etc.,no longer hip."Rock" was just 2nd-gen R&R avoiding the term R&R!But it's silly to claim the derivative is "truest" R&R!

ike turner was a musical genius regardless of his drug addiction and violent nature.ike had a horrible childhood which no doubt helped to shape his personality.miles davis was the same,a misogynist.his violence toward woman is well documented.he was also from east st louis.noone denies his musical genius.tina gave an interview some years back and spoke very tenderly of ike and said in the beginning, before the drugs"ike was a very special person"...........

noone loves Tina more than i do or hates more what Ike did to her but i feel Ike got more than his share of payback while he was still alive, watching Tina rise to the top while his own life lay in the shambles of his own making.lets give the devil his dues and recognize his great contribution to modern music and give him his place in history that he rightfully deserves.

Perhaps the word "owe" is too strong. But you have to admit Ike launched Tinas career and he is certianly owed credit for that. Now you might not agree but even Tina herselfs admits to that. He (They) had personal problems and that life but the history of Ikes influence to Tina's success cannot be ignored.
And that is real...

i absolutely agree with you.Ike was a musical genius and he immediately recognized Tinas huge talent.i hate what he did to Tina but i certainally would never deny his huge contributions to modern music or the fact that he launched Tinas career.
