Under the Taliban, Afghan women risked everything to be beautiful. Now the US fashion industry is helping them open their own beauty parlours and achieve financial independence.
Sima Calkin has not seen her home country of Afghanistan for 23 years. Now she is returning to advise local women about running their own beauty salons. It's all thanks to a new scheme aimed at restoring dignity and self respect to the women of Afghanistan. But the war ravaged country she flies into bears no resemblance to the lush paradise of her childhood. "I am in shock ... it's mind boggling to see what has happened," she despairs. She is also racked by guilt for having abandoned her country in its hour of need. By teaching the women to become beauticians, she hopes she can make amends. And there are plenty of women desperate to be taught these valuable new skills. Beauticians in Kabul earn much more than doctors or labourers. In a country where 60% of women are widows and many are the main breadwinners, working as beauticians offers a real opportunity to improve their lives.

Niazi16: I agreed partial of your comment about afghanistan...but I was not in agreement at all with your comment on invading Iran cause that's just a funny joke...if you follow the news and have political knowledge you'll find thousands of reasons that why America never attacks Iran. the main reason is they are all friends together..Mullahs are their brothers. There should be a reason why they started teaching them how to do make up before educating and providing educational facilities for them. That is exactly what many think. WHY the hell would america give damn about women from a war torn country, when american women do not have freedom here and "EQUQLITY" here. But of course not, the Americans did not have the intentions to do good. Their intention was and still is; to break up afghanistan/pakistan/Iran into pieces. To make them fall back another 100 years. YOu are right citizens, mainly women are mistreated here. Women make 70 cents of one mans 1.00 that is not in talked about.

I am glad you felt a wave of mistreatment in my words. Exactly how an afghan may feel when you post rude comments. I am not passive. YOu may be in doubt, that the United States may not invade Iran, but once an ALLIE, could be an ENEMY. FOr example Russia at the moment is not in good terms with the UNITED STATES,a "war of WORDS" again, but invisible. BUT that is true MULLAHS are their Brothers. When Russia invaded afganistan there were 60,000 registered MULLAHs under the Russiian government.

how can you make sure this war of world is not on purpose. If you read the news you'll see that this year..Just this year 2008 iran has imported 2000,000 tonnes of wheat from the U.S. read the news or google to find out Isreal is one of the biggest importers of Iranian Pistachio after germany. That's just a movie you are watching not a reality. If they want to change iran it happens sooner than Islamic revolution.

Yes of course the war is on purpose,what was your point? The "TOP" dogs have an agenda and that agenda includes Iran, afghanistan, pakistan... The point is that there is no sanction that's just bullshit. They are changing the price of oil by these fake sanctions. Also, they directly import wheat from America with no third party in charged.

To break these countries into pieces? You're kidding. That is the most backwards logic for a global order dominated by the US I've ever heard. What hawks and neocons want are friendly/puppet governments that will cater to their expansionism. How does a fractured state supply oil and support forward air bases? It doesn't.
