How it feels to have a stroke

Uploaded by: TEDtalksDirector
Video Description:
http://www.ted.com Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.

Watching this ... ( 1 week ago by yinyangnature)
Watching this reminded me of my late wife who died from a brain tumour. She was often fascinated with patterns and incidental objects. There was also an incredible connection between us in this period.
Before she died, she tried to speak to me, but I wasnt able to understand her. This was the last time she tried to communicate with me before she died three days later. After listening to Jill Bolte Taylor, theres no doubt my beautiful late wife experienced Nirvana - I saw it in her eyes.

I don't think it ... ( 1 week ago by ism3c)
I don't think it should bother people when some compare her experience to a good trip on drugs. Basically her brain, just like any druggy was altered to experience this. What I do want these druggies (i am one) to understand (I'm pretty sure) the majority of them are not professional neuroatonomists or spent 9 years recovering after their incident. But the most important thing is how this contributes to science coming from a professional who can actually communicate this coherently. Good day.

WHo or what I am, or what I do or don't do, has nothing 2 do with the fact the chick in this video is just pimping retarded neo-curry nonsense. Now go have sex with nigs or something - become '1 with the infinite consciousness' of African-style squalor & retardation. What does it matter right? Go die :)

The overal theme of this video is 'lobotomize ya'self 2 become 1 with the world'. I'm surprised the himeys (jewz) don't give her some big award 4 this crap :) Line up white boys & girls 4 your retard shots - ignorance is bliss! Don't forget 2 elect a nig president while ya' at it (yo yo yo)

I can't believe ... ( 1 week ago by Elahe1958)
I can't believe there are so many ignorant people who have no understanding of how interesting this video is and why. I think these people who make fun of some scientist like her who is trying to communicate a very important facts about human biology + some personal experience of some deadly brain condition to other people, should watch other clips that is not worth watching. One can learn alot from what she is saying about stroke and our experiences. But not everyone can appreciate that.

Don't like the whole part about being connected, the rest is good... Its rare to find a video on the phenomenology of a stroke. It is a gem to have it told by such a fluent and interesting academic. Not many people would be so optimistic about this situation.
My only beef is, how can she connect all the sensations of her stroke to physical processes of neurons, but her 'awakening' or attainment of nirvana is somehow related to the 'soul'? Difference in opinion though; very humbling video.

to me, the part about connection is the best part! it brought me shivers and tears cuz it affirms my deepest dreams about what life is - onelove, unity, spirit in human form, spirit having a human experience.... i'm gonna be awake during the next transition knowing this!!!!!

The state of Nirvana she speaks of connotes a more religious meaning, as in the state that high level lamas and gurus are trying to achieve. The state of oneness with the universe it what results when you are able to transcend the illusory world around us as well as the ever present ego.

The science is good.
The spiritual context is, however, a matter of interpretation. And who knows!? Maybe she's right.
It is in any case food for thought.
And the experience of togetherness and 'one-ness' is often spoken of, written about, by poets and artist. Furthermore, a feeling that perhaps we've all possibly experienced at some point in our lives.
Wouldn't it be nice if what it alludes to was so???... hm....
