CF-18 (Non-commercial Reproduction)

Video Description:
The McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet (CF-188) is a Canadian Forces aircraft, based on the American F/A-18 Hornet.
In 1977, the Canadian government identified the need to replace the NATO assigned CF-104 Starfighter, the NORAD assigned CF-101 Voodoo and the CF-116 Freedom Fighter, although the decision was later made to keep the CF-116. The subsequent decision was to proceed with the New Fighter Aircraft competition (NFA), with a purchase budget of around 2.4 billion CAD to purchase 130-150 of the winner of the competition. Candidates included the F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, Panavia Tornado, Dassault Mirage F1 (later substituted by the Mirage 2000), plus the products of the American Lightweight Fighter (LWF) competition, the F-16 Falcon, F/A-18 Hornet, and a de-navalized version of the Hornet, the F-18L. The government stressed that the winner of the competition be a proven off-the-shelf design and provide substantial industrial benefits as part of the order.
By 1978, the New Fighter Aircraft competitors were short listed to just two aircraft; the F-16 Falcon and the two F-18 offerings. The F-14, F-15, and the Tornado were rejected due to the high purchase price, while Dassault dropped out of the competition. The F-18L combined the systems and twin-engine layout of the F-18 that Air Command favored with a lighter land-based equipment setup that significantly improved performance. However, Northrop, the primary contractor for the F-18L version, had not built the aircraft by the time of the NFA program, waiting on successful deals before doing so. Additionally, while Northrop offered the best industrial offset package, it would only "pay off" if other F-18L orders were forthcoming, something the DND was not willing to bet on.
However, the F-14 almost entered Canadian service through the backdoor due to the Iranian Revolution. In the aftermath of the revolution, the US cut off all military supplies, which meant that their new fleet of F-14's would be potentially rendered unflyable due to a lack of spares. The Canadians offered to purchase them at a steeply discounted price. However, the negotiations died before a deal was reached as it was revealed that Canadian involvement was instrumental for the smuggling of American embassy personnel out of the new Islamic Republic
In 1980, the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet was declared the winner of the New Fighter Aircraft competition. The order included 98 single-seat variants and 40 dual-seat variants, for a total of 138 purchased, plus 20 options (which were not exercised). The F/A-18 Hornet was then dubbed the CF-188 (the name Hornet not being used as the translation in French is "Frelon," which is already used by a French military helicopter). However, in every context except the most official of military documents, the planes are referred to as CF-18 Hornets. Reasons for the selection listed by the Canadian Forces were many of the features that was requested to be included for the US Navy; two engines for reliability (considered essential for conducting Arctic sovereignty and over the water patrols), an excellent radar set, while being considerably more affordable than the F-14 and the F-15.

Do you think Harper is makeing Canada into a more powerful coutry? if he is that awsome
Array ( 4 weeks ago by Jimderkaisser)
@73828
Harper's give more importance about Canadian Security and Canadian Economy than Liberal in fact...liberal in 1993-2005 always playing with Canadian money...such our money before Harper was evaluated at $0,60 U.S, now our dollar (before the crash two week ago) was evaluated at $0,98 or some time $1 U.S (Egal with U.S money)
is a huge difference since liberal came to power. And Liberal cut so much money on the army , passed 120.000(1990) Soldiers to 98,000 (2008)
Before Afghanistan ... ( 4 weeks ago by Jimderkaisser)
Before Afghanistan war, canada had only 70,000 soldiers in 2001-2008 canda have 98,000 soldiers and Harper said we need :
70,000 in regular forces
30,000 in reserve
6,000 rangers
Now the number is approximately :
62,000 regular forces
25,000 reservist
4,000 rangers
And that is for 2008-2010 the 100,000 soldiers (Navy,Army,Airforces,Rangers)
the canadian army defence budget in 1993-2001 was 11 Billion, in 2008 this is 18,9 Billion and for 2031...96 Billion dollar.

Canada isn't a war country and we don't have enemy so our forces is built for defence, and patrol ,but is trained for kill and destroy any country with art of defence and technology.
We have a large budget for our military size (18,9 Billion dollar, some country who have 500,000+ like Israel have the same budget)

If you're the best pilot in the world, the MIG-21 can be a killer because this aicraft are very small and very fast. Its called "Pilot Aircraft" that mean, you're good the aircraft will be good, you're not good is a flying coffin.
So yes the CF-18 vs MIG-21 is a very fair combat.

If you're gonna throw in a lie about your air force shooting down an enemy aircraft into your video, at least use the right HUD footage. The footage marked "CF-18 Shooting Down A MiG-21" is obviously HUD footage of an American F-14A (simpler, lower quality symbology) shooting down a MiG-23 off the coast of Libya. I have several dedicated videos to the F-14 and any Tomcat fan will recognize it from that event.

Canada has a great air force. You shouldn't soil it with lies and inaccuracies like this.
Also-when did this event take place? What nation was Canada flying against? Over what country? Was it a UN or NATO operation? I've just never heard of any Canadian pilots getting live kills during operations.

You know, you look like someone who said the ARPAT and MARPAT is a ameircan made...but when you look closer is from guy cramer (HyperStealth Technology, a canadian made). Its exactly the same thing isnot a F-14 HUD film but a CF-18 in late 1980 when canada had his first HUD on the CF-18.
IF isn't a CF-18, why does some canadian tv show such discovery channel, history channel, CBC and whatever said "CF-18" don't call me a liar.
Russian Aircraft ... ( 2 weeks ago by Jimderkaisser)
Russian Aircraft during Cold War always travel canadian territory for spying some important military base, such Alert..this is for why canada create the Joint Task Force North and still remaining today. Isn't the first time canada shotdown a aircraft or escort out of canadian territory, in fact during the 9/11 (2001) canadian CF-18 escort several aircraft and one of them refused to obey from Canadian air forces, they were lock and ready to opening fire..only an expemple of CF-18 don't joking.

ARPAT, MARPAT- I've never made mention of these so you're confused on that, too. The footage immediately before the clip I'm disputing says "REAL DOGFIGHT CF-18 VS MIG-21" at 1:32.Sorry if you didn't put that in, but you need to know it's misrepresented. I'd love to hear about the Canadian Air Force downing baddies. I collect such stories. But to the best of my knowledge, the CF-18, while it has dropped a lot of bombs and scared a lot of baddies off, remains unblooded in the Air-to-Air arena.

This is the real dogfight cf-18 vs mig-21..isn't the first time i saw this video on national tv such CBC/Radio-Canada LCN and whatever archive videos and for sure army. On my regiment they have alot of military footage such combat in kosovo and gulf war (1991).
If is not a CF-18 vs MIG21 but a F-14A vs MIG-23 maybe the canadian media and canadian forces lies about this combat footages, don't juge me i just made a video for canadian CF-18 pilot.

OK, I apoligize for my mis-judgment. Nevertheless, the video is in error. I have spent the last few hours looking for CF-18 A-2-A kills and found nothing. Doesn't mean they're not any good, just means they haven't been in the right place at the right time for it.
Now, I have talkd to USAF and USN pilots who have been on exercises with the Canadian Air Force, and have only the highest praise for them.
I assure you the video is a US Navy F-14 shooting down a Libyan MiG-23 ca. 1986.

CF-18 is a good aircraft since canada have this aircraft they're always in modernization and now they're in block II (2006-2009) with new equipement (the lasted) for still remaining a good aircraft. The CF-18 is on the end life, he will be retired in 2017 with a reccord age for military jet fighter of 40 years services.
CF-18 have few canadian modification, so yes is the better version than the F-18 and they use many modification who are not in F-18 such the bomb pylon under the fighter.
