No, both tanks are childs of the MBT 70 project(USA/GER). Only the results of that canceled project were in use for both tanks.
The Leopard 2 never competed against the Abrams as the next US MBT. They just tested what is the advantage or disadvantage of both tanks in that competion you mean.

Did you know that the F-22 fighter an the Eurofighter are also childs of a Coop project between USA and Germany? Its true the project was called X-31. It was also the first X-project plane flown by a foreigner.
Our countrys should do more Coop projects.the results are always nice like Abrams,Leopard 2, F-22 or Eurofighter. XD

the best tank in the worl is the german leopard 2a5! The m1 has the same kanon as the leopard, cause its the best and the us baught it from germany, but i think the 2a5 is slightly better!
