France has lost many wars, but also won plenty. Remember, before the US became a global power, French was the global language of diplomacy.
Anyway, they were bound to lose many of those wars. They were greatly outnumbered, and didn't have the resources their enemies had. They fought anyway. Even during WW1, they had a military force to be reckoned with. The French aren't cowards by any means.
