Stuff Smith was my ... ( 10 months ago by jlhaussler)
Stuff Smith was my maternal grandmother's (Ida Smith's) brother, my mother's uncle and my great uncle. My mother knew him when she was a child (growing up in Cleveland) but since Stuff spent his later years in Europe, she did not see him often. We have several family stories about him and are proud that he made an impact on the mlusic world and many people.

You are all ignoring the great Johnny Guarnieri... probably the greatest stride player of his time. I was proud to call Johnny my friend. He would have me (a modern player) sit in on his breaks at the Tail of The Cock Restaurant in Burbank in the '70s and early 80s.

There is another vid featuring Stuff Smith but he's not listed in the caption; so you may not find it except by accident. None of the players are listed, which is incredible because they include Buck Clayton, Roy Eldridge, Georgie Auld, Urbie Green, Buster Bailey and Johnny Guarneri. Look for Art Ford Jazz Party Vol 1

I have a lot of information on a piano player who was born in Middleport, Ohio a few miles away from Portsmouth and who is on Stuff Smith's Recordings. He is reported to have performed for silent films at the age of ten. Name: Sam Allen. I hope there may be someone around who knows about these guys.
His family can be traced back to Virgina in the 1830's. Sorry I don't have more info on Stuff Smith.

Delighted to find a video of my favourite jazz violinist. Stuff had an amazing vibrato technique where the finger moved independently from the hand. Would have loved to attend that party!

this is the first time I have seen video of Stuff Smith. I wouldn't have guessed it but he has sort of a similar technique as the hungarian gypsy violinists. with the wrist semi colapsed and his thumb sticking up. but nonetheless a fantastic player! Thanks for posting

I'm not sure how into it he was, but his playing was a legend :) I bet that traditional fiddilng was much more popular in Smith's time, than it is now.
