RAF AFGHAN DIARIES: SPECIAL FEATURE: RAF Kit 2 -- SA 80 LSW

Uploaded by: royalairforce
Video Description:
SPECIAL FEATURE: The second of three special features on the kit that RAF Regiment Gunners use on an everyday basis. Armed with a high visibility scope and a longer barrel, it is accurate at longer ranges.
The RAF has given Paul Goodfellow a handheld video and a small 'lipstick' camera to create his films; he has no previous experience as a cameraman. His videos are checked in Kandahar to ensure they don't include any sensitive data, then sent to London and posted online.

Yes you can. We spent millions on getting our weapons to NATO standard i.e to the same rounds as the US so now u can nick magazines from M16s in the field.

No you can't, you can get the standard M4/M16 magazines in but you cant get the US box magazines in as the the magazine end (feeding area) is to short so the magwell stops the box magazine top going in properly.

LoL, I guess I'd have to agree with that. Everything I've read about the SUSAT says that its very effective. A lot of my respect goes to it. Im an Eotech guy myself :) Works swell on my DPMS A-15.

The SA80 A1 wasn't that reliable and created a lot of blockages due to the shape of the cocking handle and its gas parts.
The A2 however is very reliable and is very light and manoeuvrable. New designs to the cocking handle, gas plug and bolt reduce the risk of blockages.
I use the A2.

The very first time I fired an SA80 was with a blank round, and it jammed after 5 rounds....however, this was because my BFA wasn't fitted correctly, and blank rounds produce less gas to fire the cocking handle back.
I have never had a problem since, using live or blank rounds.

So can u bury the A2 in sand, water, mud and it still function?
Not to those ... ( 4 months ago by HVJamie)
Not to those extremes, although saying that I haven't had a chance to try it in those conditions. You've got to understand that a rifle is split up into several "sections"
Putting the rifle in water will cause the working parts to rust, aswell as the main body and TMH.
Placing it in mud may subject the TMH and magazine to mud getting inside, which can and most likely will lead to a blockage and sand will cause a problem with the rounds in the magazine, and debris in the barrel and working parts

Paul Goodfellow.I thought this was a government propaganda film aimed at drawing in the "Youth of today",someone ought to point out to these chaps, that while it may be fun is it really worth getting blown up and killed,or worse crippled for life for £800 a month,as you are basically 24/7 in the forces it works out to about 20p an hour.Get a real, safe job and let the fucking members of parliament roll around in the sand being killed.

SA80 "light"? It's heavier than the SLR for fucks sake! Might have something to do with the big metal bars Royal Ordnance put in the forestock to shift the balance from the rear of the rifle.
We had a great design in the EM2 in 1951 - a weapon and round 40 years ahead of its time. We should have told the Yanks to get fucked and adopted it unilaterally. Unfortunately, Churchill let us down again with respect to the Americans. His complete inability to see their cynicism was his great failing.
