As part of its series on veterans from some of the world's most brutal and forgotten conflicts Al Jazeera travelled to Russia.
Despite being the Soviet Union's largest military operation since the second world war, the decade-long war in Afghanistan is regarded by many as a humiliation and the Soviet 'Vietnam'.
However many veterans are still physically and psychologically damaged by their time in Afghanistan and say they do not receive adequate support upon their return.

Though I am a supporter of the Soviet Union, this was a mistake and I just cant understand why it happened. And it didnt show even 1% of true soviet strength... they didnt unleash their true might.

Ramosay all you do is cough up the same lines again and again come back with a more interesting argument,rather than just spamming. It is a solid fact! That the Soviets were asked there by the Socialist government at the time. Im not saying that makes it right, im not saying that Soviets didn't do bad things. But I ask you this, were they not civilians in the twin towers, were they not civilians in the London 7/7 bombing. Just like your family, civilians have been the main victims of conflict

The reporter said the U.S.S.R. was replaced by a free market system. This is wrong. They all still have governments that have some socialism and a good amount of fascism. All the former soviet republics do not have free markets/capitalism. They have very mixed economies since they all have governments. This is always the case when you have states/governments.

Shame that Al Jazeera did not interview the civilian victims of Soviet agression, this is a very one sided video with veterans not admitting that they have psychological problems because their army was out killing men women and children in Afghan villages. Some vets admit the truth an example of this can be found in Colin Thubron's book The lost heart of Asia, the vets shown here were just glossing over their misdeeds in Afghanistan.

it was not aggression of Soviet union. SOVIET union shared a common border with afghanistan and its communist government was in threat. Vietnam was NO WHERE CLOSE to USA. this was not Aggression it was protection. Alot of americans want to say Russians are evil. in vitnam USA killied 3 million in Afghanistan Soviets killed 1 million.
